Chen Yuzhang was born in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. From the time he remembered, he witnessed the bombing of Japanese planes. "The scene of the bomb explosion throwing the limbs of the deceased on the branches is still clearly printed in my mind." Chen Yuzhang said, "I have lived in the old China and have experienced the history of national humiliation. Keep me in my life."
When he graduated from high school and reported to the university, he did not hesitate to choose Beihang, chose the aviation engine profession, and determined to change the backward situation of China's aviation industry.
Since then, his life has been inseparable from the flying dreams of mankind.
Chen Yuzhang went to Beijing Aviation College in the 1950s. In April 1979, as the first batch of scholars to go abroad after the reform and opening up, Chen Yuzhang went to the Imperial College of Science and Technology in the United Kingdom to engage in aeroengine research. Since returning to China in 1981, he has been responsible for 7 major projects. Today, more than 60 years later, Chen Yuzhang and his team have achieved seven major achievements in the field of aero-engine research, and won the first prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and the second prize of the National Technology Invention Award.
One of the projects is the introduction of a new internationally advanced compressor.
In the late 1990s, Chen Yuzhang and his team received a research mission to study new technologies for new aircraft engine compressors. China's aero engine technology is backward, and the backwardness of compressor technology is one of the main reasons.
At that time, related technologies were regarded as key technologies that must be broken abroad. "For such a core key technology, foreign countries have severely blocked us, and there is no valuable information at all." Chen Yuzhang said. In such a difficult situation, we can only overcome technical difficulties by our own strength. Therefore, he decided to try another new way, that is, to make full use of the latest achievements in computational fluid dynamics, to carry out numerical simulations and numerical experiments on related technologies, and finally to verify. Later, this technology achieved a successful design test, saving money and shortening the development cycle.
However, for researchers, only the spirit of innovation is not enough, but also the skepticism that devote itself to research and dare to question.
After returning from the UK in 1981, Chen Yuzhang has been in close contact and cooperation with domestic engine research plants. On one occasion, the engine developed by a certain unit experienced airborne flameout and airborne parking during the test flight. The technicians repeatedly checked and found that there was no solution. Chen Yuzhang came to the scene and analyzed the discussion with the technicians.
When he suggested that the fault might be on the compressor expansion device, some technicians expressed doubts: "The engine used is a Soviet expansion device that has always been regarded as a classic. How could it be a problem?" The technology of the Soviet Union should not be doubted. "But after careful analysis, I was convinced that my thoughts were correct. I also conceived a new working principle and structure." Chen Yuzhang’s thinking that he dared to question, this time played a role. Subsequent experiments fully confirmed his views and solved the problem of failure. At present, this new type of expansion device has been successfully used in several types of aerospace engines in China. A certain type of fighter aircraft equipped with the engine participated in the Zhuhai International Air Show flight show twice and was successful.
Mr. Chen Yuzhang’s top academicians and PhD supervisors have many auras. However, he said: “I felt that my contribution was not enough when I thought that the overall level of China’s aviation engine industry was still lagging behind.â€
