NASA builds ideal technical solutions for pulse navigation

Pulsars are stars after "death". Their rotation speed is very fast, and they will emit powerful and regular electromagnetic pulse signals from the direction of the magnetic pole. The frequency of pulse signals emitted by different pulsars is different, and the time interval ranges from several seconds to several milliseconds. At present, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) first built a test platform to simulate pulsar launch pulses.

The test platform is called "Goddard" (Goddard) X-ray navigation laboratory test platform, used to test and demonstrate the next generation of X-ray navigation technology, as well as NASA opportunity exploration mission military and civilian equipment. In the future, the test platform will be used to verify the advanced technology of "Nuclear Star Internal Structure Exploration / X-ray Timing and Navigation Technology Space Station Exploration" (NICER / SEXTANT).

The test plan will be carried out on the 2017 International Space Station. At that time, the internal structure of neutron stars will be studied by observing similar pulsars of neutron stars, and the navigation technology (XNAV) based on pulsars will also be verified.

Due to its own characteristics, Pulsar has the potential to subvert the existing navigation technology. The pulsar's pulse is extremely stable, so it can provide high-precision timing capabilities like the GPS satellite's atomic clock. The GPS satellite signal only covers the surface of the earth, and the pulsar signal can cover the interstellar space, which is an ideal technical solution for navigation of interstellar travel in the solar system or even longer distances.

In future ISS experiments, the NIKER / SEXTANT equipment will use X-ray telescopes, silicon detectors, and other advanced technologies to measure X-ray photons in electromagnetic pulses emitted by pulsars and estimate the time it takes for the photons to reach Earth. By measuring and using special algorithms, a complete platform autonomous navigation solution will be developed.
