Unlike Samsung's small-sized Tab, Toshiba Folio's appearance is closer to Apple's iPad. While Samsung Tab is taking the route of a smart phone, which is only sold by telecommunications companies, Folio will launch in Europe in the fourth quarter of this year just like the iPad. It will provide 3G and non-3G versions.
The Wi-Fi version of Folio costs 300 euros (about 511 US dollars), while the 3G version costs 499 euros (about 639 US dollars). The product is equipped with a 10.1-inch, 1024x600-pixel resolution multi-touch screen, Nvidia Tegra processor, stereo amplifier, a 1.3-megapixel network lens, two USB ports, an SD card slot, and an HDMI that can transfer audio and video to other screens. Connector, Bluetooth communication, and 16GB of memory.
Folio weighs 760 grams, about the same as the 3G iPad. The battery continues to power for about 7 hours, but it must be used at a ratio of 65% web browsing, 10% video viewing, and 25% idle.
In addition to the existing Android applications, the Folio 100 also comes with the Opera Mobile web browser, the FBReader e-book reader, the Documents To Go office software suite, the note-taking software Evernote, Adobe's Flash Player 10.1, and the audio and video chat software Fring. It's useful, we just hope that those unwanted software that drags down the Windows PC won't be ported to Android devices.
I found the Folio 100 very good and the basic use was simple enough. Its performance is not particularly prominent, and the reaction of buttons will be slow for those who are accustomed to using mobile phones, but the application load is fast enough. The user interface is easy to use, but then again, I'm already familiar with Android usage, such as the way the virtual keyboard is called and cancelled.
The Folio 100 also has Toshiba Place service. Toshiba Place offers several advantages. First, users can log in to a single site and publish content elsewhere, including Facebook and DailyMotion. In addition, the service also has a Market Place that provides users to purchase music, videos, e-books, games, news, and other All Toshiba Places device executable content. That includes Folios, Toshiba notebooks and some models of televisions. Music service is provided by 7Digital.
Like the Samsung Galaxy Tab, Folio uses Android 2.2 (not to mention Froyo). The difference between this version and the mobile phone system is that there is a Home Button at the top left of the screen, and you can go to the full application menu. Use the same way as a mobile phone. Swipe left and right to display the new application.
Many applications are familiar to Android users, just to a larger screen. This part may be a little weird. The small login window on the screen of the mobile phone occupies the entire screen at Folio. However, the difference is that the application market used by the Folio 100 is not the Android Market but the Market Place which is part of Toshiba Place.
Android Netbook: AC 100
Toshiba also released another Android netbook on the same day: AC 100. Toshiba calls this the ultimate internet companion.
The product is also equipped with 10.1-inch screen, 8GB SSD and physical keyboard, weighs about 870 grams, slightly higher than Folio. I found that the AC 100's interface reaction is not good enough, the web browsing is also a bit slow, I feel more like a big smart phone, and Non-netbook. Maybe the Wi-Fi at the show is also influential, but processing web pages still depends on the performance of the CPU.
In use, you must remember that this is an Android device, not an ordinary laptop. Taking the Back Button as an example, will let you return to the used application, while holding down the Home Button will call out a list of recently used applications. Of course, the micro-keyboard is harder to use than a normal-sized keyboard, but it's still faster than typing on a mobile phone.
The AC100 uses Toshiba’s slightly modified Android interface: Toshiba Home Menu. The changes include a list of applications at the bottom of the screen. Users can look around to see if there are other software.
