Oculus Announces the Entry of 28 VR Artists in the DevLab Content Incubation Program

Facebook's Oculus VR and Kaleidoscope jointly announced DevLab, a new initiative that supports independent VR content creators.

They said that this cooperation will bring together 28 VR artists from all over the world to incubate new projects, explore new ideas, and create the next wave of excellent virtual reality experiences.

The reason why these 28 VR artists were selected for DevLab is that they are the representatives of innovative artists and have produced very good VR experiences, such as Arnaud Colinart ("Notes on Blindness: Into Darkness") and Ben Vance ( "Irrational Exuberance"); or famous directors such as Josephine Decker and Julio Medem.

These artists will collaborate with consultants who have a background in architecture, immersive theater, sound and film. The project will be developed and prototyped through practical workshops, live performances and round tables. Creators can then make their own version of the project and demonstrate it.

Yelena Rachitsky, creative director of Oculus, stated in a statement: “VR is a fusion of innovative disciplines. DevLab will bring experts in various fields to help explore the creative potential of VR. Creativity can promote the development of virtual reality, but this process exists. Risk, in order to help people bear these risks, we recognize the need to provide them with support and encouragement to make their ideas a reality.”

René Pinnell, executive director of Kaleidoscope, stated: "Our goal is to support independent artists because they are more willing to break away from the shackles of traditional narrative methods and discover new ways to express human emotions."

DevLab will hold a show at Facebook headquarters on December 2nd. During this period, creators will present their projects to obtain financing opportunities. The successful investment project will begin in early 2017 and be launched on the Oculus platform. The team plans to expand DevLab next year and open up more scope of applications.

In May 2015, René Pinenell co-founded Kaleidoscope with Michael Breymann, former Technical Director of Industrial Light and Magic. Kaleidoscope will help creators demonstrate completed projects, seek investment for future projects, and host events around the world to explore virtual reality art, science or business. In 2015, Kaleidoscope held its first virtual reality film festival. They have held more than 20 events so far and have participated in more than 100,000 people.

Kaleidoscope is located in San Francisco, United States. Oculus's headquarters is located in Menlo Park. DevLab will hold a two-day intensive seminar in Los Angeles, and the show will be conducted at Facebook's headquarters.
