The non-von Neumann processor, named HIVE (for Hierarchical Identify Verify Exploit), was funded by the US Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Chip giants Intel, Qualcomm, defense contractor Northrop Grumman, Northwest Pacific National Laboratory and Georgia Tech University participated in the project.
Trung Tran, project manager of DARPA's Microsystems Technology Office (MTO), said that today's computer architecture is still the von Neumann architecture that was invented in the 1940s. CPUs and GPUs have gone parallel, but their core is still the von Neumann processor. HIVE is the first graphical analysis processor, using the non-Von Neumann method, which can simultaneously perform different operations in different areas of the memory.
It allows a large map to be accessed simultaneously by many processors, each using its own local cache to perform simultaneous decentralized operations on the global memory. The new processor is expected to significantly reduce energy consumption.
