Qwake Tech's augmented reality system, the C-Thru, is a futuristic helmet that includes a thermal imaging camera, a toxic sensor, an edge detector, and an AR display. This device allows users to walk through the smoke with useful vision. C-Thru's inspiration may have been born in the volcano, but Qwake Tech thinks this system has more extensive applications, such as the scene of a fire.
The company is working with firefighters to improve the current handheld thermal imaging equipment. In the past, firefighters needed to stop, take out the equipment, read the information, and then put away the equipment and set off. Now, C-Thru can fix the display in front of firefighters, provide data information that is always online, and highlight key details with highlight edges. The company said that this allows firefighters to pass through buildings faster.
Tom Calvert, head of the Menlo Park fire department, said: "The ability to see the work environment will be able to subvert our industry, which may mean the difference between life and death."
