Sony announced today that cumulative sales of PSVR equipment have exceeded 1 million units. Shawn Layden, president and chief executive officer of Sony Interactive Entertainment America, acknowledged that although the installed base of PS4 owners will be close to 60 million, PSVR still has a lot of work to do. "This is still only a million," he said.
Layden expects this year's sales to be largely up due to ample supply. "We will have a more adequate supply in the market (PSVR)," he said. "At Christmas last year, it was very difficult to find a PSVR anywhere. So we didn't do a lot of promotions at the time because we didn't want to promote a product that people couldn't find, and we didn't want our customers to be more dissatisfied."
The VR game on the platform will be a pain point. When the PSVR was released, it was released with a strong lineup of VR games, including the very popular Thumper and Rez Infinite. However, there are not many good games after that, and there are no significant highlights other than Resident Evil 7's VR model.
However, last month, seeing the launch of the shooting game Farpoint and Aim Controller, Layden thought this was the "second wave" game for the PSVR platform. "When a new platform is launched, there will be a masterpiece written along with it," he said. "Then there will be an empty window between masterpiece and masterpiece. I think what we are seeing now is this situation. But Farpoint is enough to lead the new trend. We will also talk about some other games on E3." According to Sony, PSVR owners have so far purchased 5.25 million VR games, playing an average of 25 minutes per game.
