New device overcomes LIN bus limitations in modern automotive lighting applications

Melexis today announced a new LIN to LIN gateway that overcomes the limitations of only 16 devices on a typical LIN bus. Each MLX81120 is connected as a LIN slave to the main LIN bus and is directly controlled by the Body Control Module (BCM). The new device allows up to 16 LIN RGB slave modules to be attached to the main LIN bus, allowing up to 196 LED lighting devices to be connected to a single BCM via the LIN bus.

This full-featured second-generation LIN to LIN gateway is based on the popular MLX16 RISC CPU application controller. The 16-bit MCU includes 32kB of flash memory (with ECC), 16kB ROM, 2kB RAM, and a 380b EEPROM (with ECC). The LIN driver, bootloader, math library and RGB color mixing algorithm are pre-installed in the ROM.

The LIN slave protocol controller operates at up to 19.2kBaud and is compliant with LIN 2.x and SAE J2602 protocols. The module processes data frames autonomously, ensuring very little disruption to the main application. The MLX81120 also includes a master-slave LIN transceiver, both compatible with the LIN 2.x and SAE J2602 protocols. The second main transceiver enables a decentralized ambient lighting architecture in the car, so we can easily add and/or change lighting functions for different vehicle models or equipment options without having to change complex body control modules or lighting ECUs.

The device's built-in rich I/O capabilities include four high-voltage I/O lines, a 16-bit PWM output, interruptible inputs, and a 10-bit ADC with integrated pre-driver. The MLX81120 features an efficient voltage regulator that consumes only 20μA in sleep mode. Other features include LED temperature compensation, LED leakage compensation/control, and an integrated battery and temperature monitor.

The flexible, configurable MLX81120 can be configured with flash memory to meet customer needs, with three external components for LIN RGB, saving board space and reducing solution costs.

Michael Bender, lighting product line manager at Melexis, said: “Automotive applications are a major core market for Melexis. As lighting solutions continue to evolve (especially in the cabin), designers tell us they There is a need to be able to overcome the architectural limitations of the LIN bus in a simple way. The MLX81120 is fully compliant and can provide segmentation and expansion of the lighting bus for future use cases. In addition, the device significantly reduces board space (and cost). It also provides many useful features and protections. For example, even with a lot of lighting added, the control module can be kept as simple as possible."

The MLX81120 offers an automotive temperature range of -40°C to +125°C and is housed in a small DFN4x4 12-pin package. The device is available as a PPAP sample and provides a useful demo board and development software.
