Littelfuse , a global leader in circuit protection, today announced the P LED xUx unidirectional series of LED open circuit protectors, adding a new member to the company's broad range of P LED LED open circuit protection devices. The product provides a switched electronic shunt in the event of an open-circuit fault in one of the LED strings. The PLED device is in parallel with each of the LEDs in the series. When an LED fails, the PLED connected to it turns on and directs the current that should pass through the fault LED to the PLED, so the other LEDs can operate as usual. PLEDxUX devices provide reverse battery/power polarity protection for higher LED reliability. Typical applications include street, subway, airstrip and tunnel lighting, as well as headlights, roadside warning lights and billboards.

The PLEDxUx family of devices is suitable for 1 watt LEDs, nominally 350 mA, 3V. Two small package sizes maximize heat dissipation and layout flexibility for dense board applications. Compared to previous LED open-circuit protection solutions such as silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCRs) and Zener diodes, the PLEDxUx family offers higher reliability and lower maintenance requirements. For example, SCRs are typically bulky and require additional components such as resistors to set the trigger voltage or turn-on voltage, and their trigger voltages will fluctuate greatly with temperature. Zener diodes cause additional power loss in the event of an open-circuit fault in the protected LED. These products are also not suitable for higher DC currents, which would shorten their life or cause catastrophic failure.
