Recently, Chicago officials confirmed that it plans to replace 85% of street lights with LED lights in the next four years, making Chicago one of the largest cities in the world to change street lighting to LED.
The program replaces 270,000 ç› high pressure sodium lamps with more energy efficient and longer lasting LED lights.
The plan starts from last year and is expected to cost US$160 million (about RMB 1 billion). However, it will also generate energy costs for the Chicago City Council.
LED manufacturers say that LED technology can reduce energy consumption by 60% to 80% and achieve a return on investment in two years or less.
The plan also includes a smart grid that can be instructed when the lights are not working so that residents can no longer report failures.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said: "This project is a win-win situation, not only one of the largest lighting modernization projects in the United States, but also can reduce the number of residents dialing 311 (Note: 311 is the hotline of the Citizen Service Center)."
He also said: "Based on this proposed project, we will provide modern, reliable and high quality lighting that will improve the quality of life in every community in Chicago."
Replacing street lights with LED lights is a global trend, and more and more cities around the world are turning to LEDs to cut costs and carbon emissions.

Illumination Grade Aspherized Lenses
The radius of curvature of one surface of the aspheric condenser lens varies with the height from the optical axis, so as to achieve the smallest spherical aberration, and the other surface is convex or flat. This type of lens can achieve short focal length focusing that cannot be achieved by a spherical lens. Light.
The aspheric condenser lens has a larger clear aperture, a higher NA, and a lower f/# value than a spherical lens. Therefore these lenses are very suitable for high-efficiency lighting applications or for collimating broadband light sources, LEDs, or other similar light sources. The condenser lens is not suitable or recommended for imaging on the camera sensor. The image can be resolved better by achromatic doublet lens or triplet lens or tube lens.
