ROHM Semiconductor: SiC device applications move hot new energy and automotive electronics market

Due to its low power consumption, high withstand voltage, high temperature resistance and high reliability, SiC power devices are widely used in inverters, converters, PFC circuits, etc. in electric vehicles/hybrid vehicles, and traditional industries ( Especially in the field of power conversion in the military industry and in the fields of rectification and inverter in new energy sources such as solar energy and wind energy, many semiconductor manufacturers are optimistic about the future of SiC technology and actively participate in it.

After acquiring SiCrySTal in Germany, which produced SiC wafers in 2008, ROHM has formed a one-stop production system from wafer fabrication, pre-process, post-process to power module in the SiC field, and took the lead in market SiC. Mass production of devices, what new fields does ROHM want to apply to SiC devices? How to play to its advantage? At the 2012 Munich Shanghai Electronics Show exhibitor, Roma Semiconductor shared its development strategy.

1. What is your forecast for hotspot applications in 2012? What are the main areas? why?

ROHM Semiconductor: We believe that SiC device applications will heat up in 2012, because, the hot technology of new energy solutions is SiC devices. It is expected that new participating manufacturers will emerge in 2012. ROHM has been actively promoting the research and development of products such as trench SiC-MOSFETs, and by mass production, it has pioneered the introduction of SiC components that are one step ahead of other companies. Second, in the field of electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles, it is also an area where SiC can play. For new energy vehicles, electrical control is indispensable. ROHM will respond to future challenges with the latest electronic technology.

With the HV and EV processes, in terms of the overall electronicization of automobiles, ROHM will respond to this trend by using high-reliability technologies accumulated in Japanese electronic equipment.

2. How does Roma Semiconductor develop a development strategy for the advantages of SiC?

ROHM Semiconductor: One of the four major strategies for the future development of ROHM is the “Power Components” strategy. ROHM is committed to the development and sales of power components including SiC components. By using these components, natural energy sources such as solar energy and wind power can be efficiently converted into electric energy. This is an indispensable component for utilizing new energy solutions. Moreover, ROHM began mass production of SiC-SBD in April 2010, and in December 2010, the world's first SiC-MOSFET mass production began.

As a result, ROHM SiC components continue to advance to the world's leading level, and efforts to expand the use of SiC components of the module products. We are promoting the development of GaN components by mass production of components using SiC materials. In the case of SiC, we have established a "one-stop" production system starting from wafers and a strategy to develop high-reliability products more quickly.

3. With the increasing miniaturization and ultra-thinness of electronic products, this has brought enormous challenges to the devices. How do you deal with these challenges?

ROHM Semiconductor: With the miniaturization and thinning of electronic products, ROHM is promoting the miniaturization and thinning of components used. This time, the world's smallest 03015 size resistor was developed. Not only this resistor, but also a variety of small and thin products are available for all products such as transistors, diodes, tantalum capacitors and LEDs. ROHM not only has small, thin products, but also small high-power products and power components.

4. In addition to new energy and automotive electronics, what other areas are where SiC takes advantage?

ROHM Semiconductor: LED lighting, in the LED lighting power circuit, ROHM has high voltage MOSFET, FRD and SiC devices to improve power efficiency. In addition, SiC devices such as modules that can be used in future EVs and industrial equipment and can operate at high temperatures are being developed.

5. Does the current economic winter cause a huge fluctuation or decline in the component market, and why? What strategy will your company take to deal with it?

ROHM Semiconductor: The European debt crisis has indeed affected the economy, but the demand for power devices for smart phones and new energy solutions that are rapidly gaining popularity this year is expected to grow. We believe there will be development and no recession. In order to pursue environmental protection, comfort and safety, the automotive electronics market is still making progress. Among them, the power from semiconductors is indispensable, and Roma has set up a special development group dedicated to the research and development of automotive electronics related products.

6. What strategies and technologies does your company use to consolidate its leading position in components?

ROHM Semiconductor: ROHM will continue to focus on the four major development strategies of “power devices”, “sensors”, “LEDs” and “multiplying strategies”, with a special focus on the automotive, new energy, medical equipment and other industrial equipment markets. In the Chinese market, we will continue to strengthen cooperation with new and old customers and become a truly international company.

7. What is your future development strategy for car comfort, safety and interconnectivity? In what areas will key research and development be carried out?

ROHM Semiconductor: Promote the development of SiC devices, power devices and various sensors for HEV vehicles and EV vehicles while promoting environmentally friendly products based on low-power technologies.

8. What are the guidelines for developing components in the future?

ROHM Semiconductor: Our strategy is to develop high-speed communication components and various sensors for wired and wireless, centering on miniaturization, high-voltage, and low-power development. ROHM will continue to develop high-reliability products and promote low-power, environmentally-friendly technologies.

9. What new passive components are displayed by your company at the 2012 Shanghai Electronics Show in Munich?

ROHM Semiconductor: ROHM will bring power components led by SiC components that are important in new energy solutions. Moreover, it will showcase unique products such as small components. In addition, ROHM will bring the latest automotive electronics solutions such as SiC devices for electric vehicles.
