In the morning news on March 11, Beijing time, US 3D printer maker MakerBot CEO Bre Pettis (Bre PetTIs) last week at the SXSW interactive conference demonstrated the prototype of the 3D scanner.
Pettis said that MakerBot is developing a desktop 3D scanner called DigiTIzer to help users more easily convert real-world items into data that can be used for 3D printing.
Scanning is one of three ways to obtain printable design files for 3D items. In addition to scanning, users can download files created by others, or use the software to design models from scratch. Commercial 3D scanners have appeared, but the price is as high as several thousand dollars. In addition, users can also use their own 3D imaging device, such as the camera in Microsoft Kinect, to make such a scanner.
MakerBot has not announced the price of DigiTIzer. DigiTIzer is still a prototype product, but according to Pettis: "Now everyone can scan real-world items." This means that Digitizer is close to being launched for consumers, similar to the company ’s original $ 1800 Replicator 3D printer.
According to MakerBot's press release, Digitizer will use "traditional lasers and cameras to copy actual items into digital formats and files." So far, no other manufacturer has launched a competitive consumer 3D scanner.
The MakerBot website does not provide any parameters, prices and sales information about Digitizer. The website only provides a registration form where users can leave an email address to get the latest developments in the future.
