Pinnacle Imaging Systems and ON Semiconductor launch a low-cost HDR video surveillance solution based on Xilinx technology

In real-world testing, the new solution captures and tone-maps high-contrast scenes up to 120 dB or 20 EV, all in full HD 1080p 30 fps real-time output.

November 7, 2018 – Pinnacle Imaging Systems, a developer of high dynamic range (HDR) image signal processors (ISP) and HDR video solutions, and ON Semiconductor, a leading supplier of HDR image sensors, have jointly launched a new lower cost HDR Video surveillance solution capable of capturing high-contrast scenes (120 dB) with 1080p resolution and 30 frames per second output. This new HDR video platform, running on the Xilinx Zynq 7030 system-on-a-chip (SoC), meets the requirements for capturing the details of highlights and shadows in high-contrast scenes, delivering the widest dynamic range on the market for surveillance and machine vision applications. The new monitoring solution will be on display during VISION (6-9 November 2018). Cameras, artificial intelligence (AI) developers and media interested in seeing a live product demonstration are invited to visit the Avnet Silica/Avnet EMG GmbH booth (Hall 1, Booth 1C82) to speak with a representative from Pinnacle Imaging.

The Pinnacle Imaging System Denali-MC HDR ISP has ported IP cores to run on Xilinx technology and paired with ON Semiconductor's AR0239 CMOS image sensor to maximize the sensor's unique triple exposure HDR capability. Xilinx's hardware programmable SoC architecture enables Pinnacle Imaging to develop a new custom sensor interface to support the AR0239 at a fraction of the cost and development time of other SoCs or ASIC-based ISPs part. Denali-MC's advanced motion compensation algorithm minimizes motion artifacts often associated with multi-exposure HDR capture, and Pinnacle's locally adaptive tone-mapping algorithm accurately reproduces color and tonal gradations in high-contrast scenes. With Pinnacle Imaging's proprietary Ultra HDRTM technology, camera placement is no longer an issue. These powerful capabilities also provide cameras and AI developers with more precise image data, improving the accuracy of recognition systems, making solutions more suitable for surveillance cameras and machine vision systems, intelligent transportation systems, smart cities, autonomous surveillance systems, and more.

Alfred Zee, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Pinnacle Imaging Systems said, "ON Semiconductor, as a technology partner, provided the critical support necessary to bring this project to fruition. The high dynamic range capabilities of ON Semiconductor's AR0239 sensor, coupled with the Xilinx Zynq The performance of the SoC provides an ideal foundation for our Ultra HDR surveillance platform. We worked closely with the ON Semiconductor team to achieve the best possible high dynamic range and low light performance with the AR0239 CMOS image sensor.”

Pinnacle Imaging also worked closely with ON Semiconductor engineers to develop a new sensor interface to support the triple exposure HDR capture mode of the AR0239 CMOS image sensor.

Gianluca Colli, Vice President and General Manager, Consumer Solutions Division, Smart Sensing Group, ON Semiconductor, said: "Pinnacle Imaging's HDR Merging and Locally Adaptive Tone Mapping IP from our AR0239 sensor provides both dynamic range and accurate color and contrast reproduction. The best results. The flexibility of Xilinx's hardware programmable SoC architecture enables them to be first to market, support our new triple exposure sensor design, and serve as an important reference design for the future."

The Pinnacle Imaging team further optimized the Denali-MC HDR ISP IP to fit the smaller, cost-optimized Xilinx Zynq 7030 SoC, opening up new and competitive markets for smart security and surveillance cameras.

Christoph Fritsch, Senior Director, Industrial Internet of Things (IoT) Science and Medical Group at Xilinx, said: "In order to provide our customers with a best-in-class solution, we evaluated a number of ISPs from different vendors. Pinnacle Imaging System's Denali-MC ISP Demonstrating excellent image quality and HDR tone mapping, we are delighted that Pinnacle has adopted Xilinx."

Availability and Demonstration

The Denali-MC ISP with ON Semiconductor AR0239 sensor will be showcased at the Avnet Silica /Avnet EMG GmbH booth (Hall 1, Booth 1C8) at VISION in Stuttgart, Germany (November 6-9, 2018).

Pinnacle Imaging System's Denali-MC development platform will be available to camera designers in Q1 2019.

Incremental Encoder

Incremental encoders provide speed, direction and relative position feedback by generating a stream of binary pulses proportional to the rotation of a motor or driven shaft. Lander offers both optical and magnetic incremental encoders in 4 mounting options: shafted with coupling, hollow-shaft, hub-shaft or bearingless. Single channel incremental encoders can measure speed which dual channel or quadrature encoders (AB) can interpret direction based on the phase relationship between the 2 channels. Indexed quadrature encoders (ABZ) are also available for homing location are startup.
