Google hinted that the company’s criticized Google Glass headset will one day come back to the augmented reality technology.
Rick Osterloh, head of Google’s hardware division, said that high-tech glasses are “very interesting†for us, but he admits that it will take years to become a mass market product.
In 2014, Google released the first glasses with a camera to the public, including screens for reading text and watching videos cautiously. A year later, they sparked a feeling of a boycott of privacy, and Google cancelled the project, which was also listed as a major failure of the company.
However, recent technological advances have rekindled interest in augmented reality (AR) headsets. Intel and the mysterious American startup Magic Leap are developing holographic glasses, while Microsoft's HoloLens is starting sales in 2016.
It is rumored that Apple is also developing its own equipment.
Last year, Apple and Google introduced AR functionality into their mobile software, allowing virtual objects to interact with the real world through camera screens, but a lightweight pair of glasses is considered more likely to be the future home of the technology.
Osterloh said: "We are trying to determine what other ways of experience besides mobile phones will look like."
“We have been paying attention to a variety of different form factors, and we have a lot of research going on, but we don’t have product announcements coming soon.â€
“Technology is ripe for a while... It will be a few years ago. We will invest in this area for a long time because technology has caught up with where people want it to go.â€
In the past two years, Google has made long-term progress in its hardware. It has released its own line of mobile phones and smart speakers, but its revenue is small compared to its huge advertising empire.

AR (Augmented Reality) is different from VR (Virtual Reality). Virtual reality is a fully immersive digital world, while enhanced (or mixed reality) covers the digital realm of the real world. The original Google Glass project used AR, and Apple's ARKit and Google's ARCore helped push mainstreaming and hybrid reality to mainstream awareness in the past few months.
