Samsung Electronics cited data from industry research organization IHS Markit that large-size TVs of 75 inches and above accounted for 5% of global TV sales this year, a year-on-year growth rate of up to 80%.
"TVs around 50 inches were considered large-size TVs in the past, but now they are considered average," said Samsung Electronics. As far as the Korean market is concerned, sales of 60-inch models in 2018 are expected to exceed 50-inch products.
The South Korean technology giant claims that last year, the company accounted for 51% of the global large-size TV market of 75 inches and above. This year, its share in the large-size TV market has further expanded, reaching 58% in the first quarter of this year.
Samsung claims that it has more than 90% of the market for large-size TVs of 75 inches and above in South Korea.
"Based on the advantages of quantum dot technology, we plan to launch more models, including 75-inch, 82-inch and 88-inch models, and expand our share in the super-large TV market," Samsung Electronics said. Unlike Samsung’s local partner LG Electronics in South Korea, which promotes OLED TVs, Samsung Electronics has been promoting its QLED TVs. Samsung said that users can also customize the size and proportion of the screen through a design based on modules and bezels.
Samsung said that the company currently operates a MicroLed research laboratory at its Suwon City headquarters, and its TV manufacturing plant in Vietnam is preparing for full-scale production.
Samsung predicts that the global market size of MicroLed solutions in 2018 is about 14 million U.S. dollars and will reach 4.5 billion U.S. dollars by 2025.
