Already the third generation
At the beginning of 2009, Shanghai Electric Power Station Group proposed that “Shanghai Eco-Home†still lacked Taiwan Haibao robot, and hoped that Fudan would develop one for this, and “Haibao†as the third-generation robot came into being.
In 2003, when Fudan 78 alumni and Professor of Computer and Engineering, Michigan State University, became a special lecture professor at the University of Fuzhou, he proposed the theory of “independent mind developmentâ€. In the same year, the “Physical Intelligence Lab†was established. When theoretical research matures, robots play an important platform role in putting theoretical results into practice.
Under the leadership of Prof. Weng Juyang, Associate Professor Zhang Wenqiang and Zhang Rui of related disciplines began the theoretical research of “autonomous mental development algorithm and intelligent robotâ€.
Zhang Wenqiang feels that the relevant theory is relatively mature, and the World Expo is an excellent opportunity to showcase the results. The project is finally finalized.
In 2005, during the 100th anniversary of Fudan University, Zhang Wenqiang’s team moved from theory to practice and launched the first robot “Fudan No.1â€, which has the intelligence of a 1-year-old child. Subsequently, the successful development of the "Fudan No. 2" Fuwa robot promoted the theoretical research. The birth of "Haibao" is already a grandchildren in this robot family.
LED understands "dressing"

"It's faster than 'changing face'." Zhang Rui, a software school at Fudan University, introduced that the 1.8-meter-high, 100-kilogram Hypertherm robot is a full-body LED.
"The biggest difficulty is LED." Zhang Rui said. He is responsible for the electronic circuit part of the team. The traditional image display is mainly a flat mode, and the robot can only use the ordinary display to realize the change of the face. In order to make the “Haibao†with curved display, Zhang Rui spent a lot of energy on selecting, splicing and designing the internal circuit of the LED, and finally made “Haibao†realize the effect of dressing up. “The picture is changed by LED display, it changes at any time, and it changes immediately. We have to make it a 'hyun' effect."
Robots can learn to be smart
At the end of 2008, Zhang Wenqiang led the Haibao robot development team to embark on the pre-experience and explore how to integrate into the Expo elements. In the end, Haibao not only had to “hyun†but also “smartâ€.
On the computer desk in the lab, the camera swings back and forth, repeatedly shooting the same chair.
“This is doing object recognition testing,†says Zhang Wenqiang. This is the way the team has chosen “Hui†for Hypertherm robots. The “Haibao†that uses “autonomous mental development technology†can be like a baby. Repeated learning, gradually understanding more and more things, improve the level of intelligence. This Fudan independent research and development technology is currently in the leading position in the world.
The concept of “development†simulates the growth process of children. The child's mental development occurs through repeated parental education, communication with the surrounding children, and exploration of the environment.
The same is true for the “Haibao†robot. When it sees an item, it can extract the object features according to a set of algorithms and build a database. The researchers repeatedly told it what it was. After many "learnings", when the robot encountered the object again and matched the characteristics of the database, it could know that the thing was "teaching" by the researchers. Thereby achieving the development of the mind. In the past, traditional robot learning had to be done by writing new programs, using “autonomous mind development†techniques, and robots could recognize new things without having to reprogram.
As a result, “Haibao†has the ability to interact with tourists – it can imitate the simple arm movements of tourists, and visitors spend a long time in front of it. “Haibao†can sense tourists' interest in themselves, and it will automatically enter advanced Interactive mode, actively invite visitors to take pictures and display photos on their chests.
Interdisciplinary team support operations
Haibao's production team has 20 or 30 people, including Fudan undergraduate, master's, doctoral, and 6 team teachers; teachers and students from different majors, is an interdisciplinary combination.
"Haibao" has three modes: normal mode, advanced mode and V IP mode. In the normal mode, “Haibao†does not require personnel to operate, and can circulate and perform actions; advanced mode can be changed, photographed, and interacted; when entering the V IP mode, “Haibao†can perform object recognition.
In order to take care of “Haibaoâ€, the team prepared a full set of emergency plans. Once the "Haibao" fails, the team and the supporting company will respond within four hours and enter the on-site maintenance. "We have prepared two sets of arms. In case the set is broken, the other set will be quickly removed and replaced."
It is reported that in addition to the Haibao robot that welcomes guests in the "Shanghai Eco-House", the "Fudan No. 2" Fuwa robot has also been confirmed as an exhibit to enter the Expo Museum; two generations of robots will gather in the Expo Park.
