Virtual reality head-mounted products are highly competitive, so which one is the best?

According to the Wareable website, the virtual reality market has experienced explosive growth over the past few months. At present, there are many types of virtual reality displays available on the market, including products that need to be used with PCs, and products that need to be used with game consoles and mobile phones.

So, which virtual reality head is the best? The best thing at the moment is the Oculus Rift, which combines better gaming, touchpads, and room-sized tracking capabilities to make it the perfect high-end virtual reality experience.

But the gap between other products and it is shrinking. Vive also performs very well (and provides the best room size tracking capability). Due to the lower price and the popularity of the PlayStaTIon consoles that support it, Sony PlayStaTIon VR sold more than 1 million units last summer.

The best virtual reality headset for use with consoles and PCs

This type of product is the most competitive. Oculus and HTC products require a PC, while PlayStaTIon VR requires PlayStaTIon 4. Therefore, the choice of virtual reality heading depends basically on the user's existing equipment. If you want to choose a headset for use with your PC, make sure your PC is configured high enough to support virtual reality headlines.

1. Oculus Rift

Virtual reality head-mounted products are highly competitive, so which one is the best?

The Oculus Rift is the head of the new era of virtual reality. Developed by Palmer Luckey, Rift was financed through the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter and was later acquired by Facebook for $2 billion (approximately $12.6 billion). It plugs into the PC's DVI (or HDMI), USB interface, tracks the user's head movements, and displays 3D images on its stereo display.

The consumer version of the Rift has a resolution of 2160 x 1200 pixels and can process 233 million pixels per second with a refresh rate of 90 Hz. It is a high-tech product with a refresh rate comparable to HTC Vive. Given its powerful processing power provided by the latest PCs, it has more image processing capabilities than Sony PS Virtual Reality.

Oculus's touch handles were released at the end of 2016, giving the virtual reality world a new look. Compared to other head-mounted handles, we prefer Touch - they fit the user's hand and have a certain finger recognition ability, such as a thumbs up. Not only that, but in terms of games, Oculus has also made rapid progress. This is mainly due to Facebook's investment in the developer community, providing users with sophisticated high-quality games such as Lone Echo and Robo Recall. Rift also adds support for room size tracking, but users need to purchase at least one additional sensor to match the Vive. In the Wareable experience, the Vive tracking experience is better.

But the Oculus Rift platform is a mature product that provides users with the virtual reality experience that the company promised. At present, the price has been greatly reduced, especially if Oculus will give the touch handle to the user who purchased the head display. After the successful "Rift Summer" conference, Oculus permanently lowered its price to $399 (about RMB 2,511). Taking into account the game, experience, virtual reality quality and price, Rift ranks first in this category, replacing Vive as the king of our new virtual reality. Guess, which product will follow?

2, HTC Vive Pro

The newly released Vive Pro replaces the first generation of Vive, which was jointly developed by HTC and PC game giant Valve. Pro has made several minor upgrades to the first generation, enhancing the overall user experience, such as a better headband and built-in headphones.

Vive Pro features an OLED display with a resolution of 2880 x 1600 pixels (two eyes), 2160 x 1200 pixels above Vive and a refresh rate of 90Hz. There are two cameras on the front of the fuselage to help track the user's hand. Such technology upgrades are not enough to make Vive Pro a performance "monster." It is clearly the most technologically advanced virtual reality head-on display, but it is also expensive, up to $799 (about RMB 5,028). For users who don't need higher definition, Vive offers the same experience.

The best thing about Vive is the Lighthouse room tracking, which allows users to wear their heads and walk around the room. It outperforms its competitors in this regard. It should be noted that although the user can walk around the room, the cable connected to the PC still reminds the user that you are bundled with a PC.

However, because the Lighthouse sensor needs a favorable position to track all of the user's head and hand movements, this means that they need to be mounted high. This makes the Vive assembly work slightly more complicated than the Rift or PS VR. For Rift, the user can simply place the sensor on the table, requiring 360 degrees of tracking capability to purchase an additional sensor (2 sensors included in the Touch kit). However, when the Lighthouse is fully ready, the VR experience will take it to the next level – enough to make the PlayStation VR or Rift feel like it has passed.

The 2.0 version of the Lighthouse sensor will be curved and can support the simultaneous deployment of 4 sensors (currently only 2). The Vive tracker allows users to bring any object into the virtual reality experience, and some developers have found some innovative ways to use this feature. These features, along with TPCast's wireless adapter, give Vive an edge in technology wars. HTC is also developing eye tracking for Vive.

However, it lacks some of the game masterpieces that Rift has. Even so, Wareable believes that Vive still has a lot of games worth playing.

HTC is also considering aggressively promoting its VivePort membership service, which allows users to enjoy a certain number of virtual reality games per month.

Wareable said that although Vive and Vive Pro are technically more advanced than their rivals, for many people, they are too expensive and some technical indicators are too high. If users are interested in the hardware in the Vive ecosystem, they may be more interested in the original Vive, and the price has been lowered to 499 US dollars (about 3140 yuan).

3, Sony PlayStation VR

PlayStation VR will make many people realize what a good virtual reality is. It's not perfect, but it's a "following" game console player, and of course it can provide a great virtual reality experience. In addition to PS VR, there are no other high-quality virtual reality heads in this category, which means it has become the benchmark for mainstream game virtual reality.

Since the current sales volume exceeds 2 million units, at least Sony has won the virtual reality head-to-head sales war. In 2018, Wareable believes that it will continue to maintain its growth momentum.

Since its launch, PS VR has been offering new games, some of them from big-name developers, and Resident Evil 7 is one of the most recent masterpieces. In addition, "Doom VFR" and "Skyrim" are also quite good games.

Compared to Vive and Rift, PS VR is relatively simple to assemble - the main job is to plug the cable into the correct interface. It only has one sensor to worry about, the main reason is that most PS VR experiences are done by users sitting or standing.

Although it ranks among the top three high-end virtual reality, it is obviously a lot worse than Rift and Vive. Its refresh rate is 120Hz, which is significantly higher than the other two high-end virtual reality heads, but its resolution is only 1920 X 1080 pixels, lower than the other two products. In addition, its PS Move handles feel a bit outdated, they are designed from the era of the Nintendo Wii, compared to the Rift's touch handle, it feels like "old antiques."

Compared with Vive and Rift, the threshold of PS VR is lower, because users do not need high-end PC, just one PS4. So, while Sony admits that its technology is not as good as its rivals, it’s no surprise that the PlayStation VR is rolling Vive and Oculus Rift on sales.

4, Samsung Odyssey / Windows mixed reality

Microsoft's virtual reality plan, ordinary users may not be used to it. Instead of choosing to develop a virtual reality platform directly, Microsoft has invested heavily in developing what it calls a hybrid reality platform. Moreover, Microsoft is Microsoft. It does not personally push hardware products, but works with many third parties, such as Acer, Lenovo and HP.

Microsoft is still trying to develop a more affordable high-end virtual reality head-mounted version, many of which will have two modes of operation: a PC for configuring discrete graphics cards and another for PCs with integrated graphics. Many Windows Hybrid Realities have a starting price of about $300 (about RMB 1888), but the top end is Samsung Odyssey. It has built-in AKG stereo headphones, two AMOLED displays with a resolution of 1400 x 1600 pixels and a field of view of 110 degrees.

One of Microsoft's successes is that it's very simple to assemble Windows Mixed Reality. It uses inside-out tracking technology so users don't have to use multiple sensors to ensure that the headline is "seen". It has built-in cameras and sensors to handle these tasks, and even tracks Windows Mixed Reality controllers. However, the handle will be affected somewhat because the handle needs to be "seen" by the head.

It's important to remember that Windows Hybrid Reality is still in the early stages of development, and the amount of content reflects this. "Cliff House" is a good Windows mixed reality content, but it is currently not comparable to Vive, Rift, and even PS VR in terms of excellent content.

During the trial of Odyssey, Wareable felt its level was comparable to the Oculus Rift. It gives a high-end, comfortable feeling that is not available in similar products from companies such as Lenovo, Acer and Hewlett-Packard. As far as the current Windows mixed reality field is concerned, Samsung is a big brother.

Best mobile virtual reality head display

Because high-end virtual reality is expensive, many companies are developing affordable virtual reality headsets that can be used with smartphones. The best mobile VR headsets that can be used with mobile phones are described below. They are usually wirelessly connected, and many products are priced at less than $100 (about 629 yuan), so they are a completely different product than the high-end products mentioned above. However, users need to be aware that some mobile virtual reality heads may only support mobile phones on a certain platform.

1, Samsung Gear VR

The change of Gear VR is not too big every year, but Samsung has upgraded it enough, so that this product can always sit and move the virtual reality head. The latest version of Gear VR adds a new handle that helps users get a higher level of immersion in virtual reality content.

Of course, the visual experience with Gear VR depends on the user's Samsung smartphone. But some of the features provide users with a great experience, regardless of the phone they use, such as a 101-degree viewing angle and a black color scheme that helps reduce glare and reflected light.

However, the new handle also makes the Gear VR price rise slightly. Users need a Gear VR compatible phone that includes the Galaxy S9, S9+, Note 8, S8, S8+, S7 and S7 Edge. For Samsung smartphone users, Gear VR is the mobile VR reality that delivers the best experience.

2. Google Daydream View (2017)

Following the debut in 2016, Google’s mobile virtual reality heads are back, and although there have been no earth-shaking changes, a large number of small changes have made Daydream View a better tool for users to experience virtual reality.

First of all, the new head display increased the field of view from 90 degrees to 110 degrees. The new headband also spreads the weight of the head even more evenly, and these small improvements give the user a more comfortable experience.

According to Wareable, Daydream comes with a 3-degree-of-freedom handle that supports most phones, but the quality of the virtual reality experience will vary from phone to phone. Although the quality of the game is not comparable to the above-mentioned big-name heads, Daydream has made considerable progress in the past year and has some good games, including Keep Talking & Nobody Explodes.

3, Google Cardboard

Google wants virtual reality to be as popular as possible, so it launched the Cardboard, a very portable virtual reality headset that was folded from cardboard. The user can wear it on the head with the headband, or hold it in front of the hand – it doesn't matter, because its whole purpose is to enable users to experience the wonders of virtual reality quickly, conveniently and at low cost.

Surprisingly, Cardboard's virtual reality experience is really good. Cardboard is compatible with most mobile phones, including the iPhone, making it a good choice for users who want to experience virtual reality without money.

Wareable admits that because the material is just cardboard, it will take a long time and the Cardboard will be scrapped.
