The standard control method used in early switching power supply (SMPS) designs is called "voltage mode" operation. The ramp generator drives one input of the voltage comparator, and the error signal from the error amplifier/loop filter drives the other input, see Figure 1. What is obtained is a PWM pulse based only on the voltage error signal. The circuit in this mode of operation has the following two limitations: one is that there is no current limiting function to protect the circuit components, and the other is that the transient response to the input and output is slow.
